On Empathy and the Healing Power of Being Seen

Updated: 2 days ago

This week, I came across an article discussing the concept of “toxic empathy.”It left me wondering: how did we get here—questioning even empathy itself?

My reaction was instinctive and clear. In a world that often feels fractured, where pain is so easily dismissed and connection can feel scarce, it is more vital than ever that we stand in solidarity with one another—especially from the places of privilege we each hold.

I was reminded of this truth while working on a beautiful, therapeutic arts-based project in underserved communities in Senegal. Through creative expression, we carved out a safe and sacred space—one where people could be real, vulnerable, expressive, and free.

What struck me most was the power of presence.

My own presence, yes—as I held space for others to release some of what was heavy on their hearts. But also the collective presence of the group: bearing witness to one another in silence, in support, and in compassion. That quiet act of being seen—and being reminded that we are not alone—is deeply healing.

It’s hard to measure what it truly means to be genuinely listened to, maybe for the first time.To be held with kindness. To cry, and not be judged.

We received many powerful reflections from participants. This one stayed with me:

“I loved this workshop. It allowed me to take off the mask I wear every day in front of people. It’s the first time I’ve spoken without being afraid. I felt like myself.”

That, to me, is the true power of empathy. It is not weakness. It is not overextension. It is not indulgent. It is the thread that reminds us of our shared humanity.

More than ever, I believe in empathy as a necessity—a grounding force that says, “You matter. I see you. We are in this together.”
